Sensex Gains Nearly 2,300, Nifty Up Over 600 Points This Week

Closing Bell: A Day Of Positives

Indian equity markets continued their march towards record high levels, ending higher for the fifth straight day, thereby registering weekly gains.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended 1.3% higher at 41,893. The index is 380 points away from its all-time high of 42,273, which it made in January this year.

The NSE Nifty 50 turned positive for 2020 in today's trading session, ending 1.2% higher at 12,263. The index is 167 points away from its all-time high of 12,430.

For the week, the Sensex has gained 2,279 points, while the Nifty has surged 621 points.

Reliance Industries was the top gainer as well as the top point contributor to the gains on the Nifty 50, ending 3.6% higher. Maruti Suzuki India was the top Nifty laggard, ending 2.9% lower.

Among the sectoral indices, private banks continued their march for the week, with the Nifty Bank ending with gains of 1.8%. The index gained 2,895 points for the week.

The Nifty realty was the other major sectoral gainer, ending 1% higher. The Nifty I.T., Nifty Metal and Nifty PSU Bank index ended with gains of 0.5% each.

Broader markets underperformed in today's session but ended the day with gains. The Nifty Midcap index ended 0.7% higher while the Smallcap index gained 0.6%.

India Volatility Index ended 2.2% lower at 20.49.

1,107 stocks on the NSE ended with gains while 710 stocks declined.

Page Industries To Consider Dividend

The company informed the exchanges that it will consider its first interim dividend for FY21 at its board meeting on November 12.

It will also be declaring its quarterly results that day.

Shares gained as much as 3.8% to Rs 21,800, post the announcement. The stock is up for the fourth day in a row.

Opening Bell: A Subdued Start

Indian equity markets opened higher but with a positive bias after ending with gains for the fourth straight day on Thursday.

The S&P BSE Sensex is up 0.3% at 41,457 while the NSE Nifty 50 is 10 points away from erasing all the losses for the year, up 0.3% at 12,158.

The Nifty Bank index has opened 0.4% lower in today's session after a 2,400 point rally over the last four days.

The Nifty Media index is the top sectoral gainer, up 1.1% while the Nifty Auto index is up 0.6%.

Broader markets have opened higher. The Nifty Midcap index is up 0.4% while the Smallcap index is up 0.7% - outperforming the benchmarks.

India Volatility Index is down another 5%, below the mark of 20 at 19.91.

1,011 stocks on the NSE have opened with gains while 505 are declining.

Weekly Gains In Store

The Nifty 50 is just 48 points away from turning positive for the year. The benchmark needs to cross the 12,168 level. The Sensex already turned positive for the year in Thursday's trading session.

The four-day gains have seen the Sensex rally over 1,700 points. The Nifty has gained over 400 points, while the Nifty Bank close to 2,500 points during the period.

Futures, however, are indicating a subdued start to Friday's trading day. The Singapore-traded SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, was little changed at 12,161 as of 8:00 a.m.

Dalmia Bharat, Gujarat Gas, Vinati Organics, Birla Corp. may react to their quarterly results reported after market hours on Thursday.

Nifty 50 companies Cipla and ITC will round off the trading week with their results. Non-Nifty firms that will report results today are Vedanta, Aditya Birla Fashion, Ashok Leyland, Balkrishna Industries, CreditAccess Grameen, Dr Lal Pathlabs, MRF and Voltas, among others.

Globally, Asian markets are mixed in today's session. Markets in Japan and Australia are rising, while those in Hong Kong and South Korea are fluctuating.

Futures on the Dow Jones are off the session's low, currently trading with losses of 70 points. The index ended another 2% higher on Thursday, even as the fate of the U.S. presidential elections hangs in the balance.

West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.8% to $38.09 per barrel, while gold fell 0.5% to $1,939 per barrel.
