Nearly 21,000 Fresh Cases In Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu recorded 20,911 new coronavirus cases, 6,235 recoveries, and 25 deaths, in the last 24 hours, ANI reported citing government data. Active cases in the state now stand at over 1.03 lakh.
Delhi's Single-Day Spike At All-Time High
Delhi reported 28,867 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which is the highest number of cases the national capital has added in day.
The also reported 31 fatalities and 22,121 recoveries in the last 24 hours. It now has 94,160 active cases with 29.21% daily positivity rate.
More Than 25,000 New Cases Reported In Karnataka
Karnataka recorded 25,005 new cases, 2,363 recoveries and eight deaths in the last 24 hours. The state now has over 1.15 lakh active cases with 12.39% daily positivity rate.
Mumbai Adds Over 13,500 Fresh Covid Cases
Mumbai reported 13,702 new Covid-19 cases and six deaths on Thursday, ANI reported citing government data. The city now has 95,123 active cases.
Need To Focus More On Local Containment Of Virus: PM Modi
The Omicron variant of the Covid-19 is spreading rapidly in India compared to previous variants and in order to curb the spread of the virus the Prime Minister said that the country needs to "focus more on local containment".
"It's more transmissible...Our health experts are assessing the situation. It's clear that we have to stay alert, but also ensure to avoid panic," PM Modi said during a virtual meeting with chief ministers to review Covid-19 situation.
In addition to fighting Omicron, the country also needs to be ready for any future variants of this virus, PM Modi said. "The Rs 23,000 crore package allocated by the Centre to states has been utilised well with many states strengthening their health infrastructure. Both Center and states need to follow this pre-emptive, collective, and proactive approach this time too," he said.
India has so far administered 155 crore doses of Covid vaccines. The country, according to PM Modi, has sufficient vaccine supplies. "Vaccination is biggest weapon against Covid pandemic."
He also emphasised on the need to vaccinate frontline workers with precautionary doses. "Sooner we give precautionary dose to frontline workers and senior citizens, stronger our healthcare system will become," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday began a meeting with chief ministers of various states via video conferencing to review the Covid-19 situation in their respective states.
59 More Omicron Cases Found In Kerala
Kerala confirmed 59 more Omicron positive cases. With this the state's tally rose to 480, ANI reported.
"Out of 59 confirmed cases today, 42 are from low-risk countries, five from high-risk countries and nine through contact, and three from other states," Kerala Health Department said.

Fresh Covid-19 cases in India continued to spike as the Omicron variant spreads.
The nation reported as many as 2.47 lakh fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Jan. 13. That compares with 84,825 recoveries recorded during the period.
