India continues to add new coronavirus cases at record pace just as the nation announced the fourth phase of lifting lockdown restrictions to revive an economy that’s headed toward a rare annual contraction in more than four decades.

India added 78,761 cases in the last 24 hours, another biggest single-day spike anywhere in the world, taking the total tally to more than 35.42 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Aug. 30. This includes 63,498 deaths and nearly 27.14 lakh patients who have recovered.

Key figures:

  • Total confirmed cases: 35,42,733
