Coronavirus India Update: Active Cases Rise For The Third Straight Day; Deaths Remain Above 100

Active Coronavirus cases in India rose for third straight day, stoking fears of a second wave and renewed restrictions, even as immunisation efforts continue across the country.

Authorities reported 16,488 new cases in 24 hours according to the health ministry's update as of 8 a.m on Feb. 27. That’s higher than the recoveries in the same period, taking active cases close to 1.6 lakh. This is the third straight day of new cases being over the mark of 16,000.

Active cases now account for 1.44% of the total Covid-19 cases confirmed by the authorities since the pandemic reached India in January 2020.

113 deaths were reported over the last 24 hour period, with the total tally nearing 1.57 lakh. India has now reported over 100 deaths for the fourth day in a row. Total deaths now account for 1.42% of the over 1.1 crore coronavirus cases detected in the country. The total number of tests conducted over the last 24-hour period stood at 7,73,918.

India has administered vaccines to 1,42,42,547 healthcare and frontline workers with nearly 7.7 lakh of them receiving their shots in the last 24 hours. This comes ahead of the second phase of vaccinations which begin on March 1, where senior citizens and those above the age of 45 with comorbidities will be able to get vaccinated.

Global Update

States like South Carolina and Wyoming plan to lift more restrictions as cases continue to decline from a record during the holiday season.

California's 14-day positive test rate dropped to 2.9% - the lowest since October last year.

Overall deaths due to the pandemic surpassed 2.5 million across the globe with overall cases exceeding 113.2 million.
