India's active Covid-19 cases fell amid heightened concerns around the Omicron variant.
As many as 8,895 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry’s update at 8 a.m. on Dec. 5. That compares with nearly 6,918 recoveries during the period.
The number of deaths reported saw a sharp increase but largely due to Bihar reconciling its death data to increase the count by 2,796.
India's active caseload now stands at 99,155, accounting for about 0.29% of the total cases.
The Omicron variant of the virus has reached Maharashtra with India's fourth confirmed infection being reported from Dombivli near Mumbai, PTI reported on Saturday evening citing unnamed officials. The 33-year-old man had returned from South Africa.

Delhi Reports First Omicron Case: PTI
The first case of Omicron was detected in Delhi on Sunday, PTI tweeted citing unnamed officials. A man aged 37 returned from Tanzania and admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital with mild symptoms, the report said.
That adds to the four cases reported in the country so far.
