(Bloomberg) -- At least 34 people were killed in a landslide in Uganda’s eastern district of Bududa, following heavy rains in the region prone to mudslides, the Uganda Red Cross Society said.
The landslide occurred on Thursday in Bukalasi sub-county, where government teams are assessing the extent of the disaster, URCS spokeswoman Irene Nakasiita said by phone from the capital, Kampala.
“Our team is doing the assessment on the ground after failing to get to inaccessible areas yesterday,” she said. “The final numbers of fatalities and affected families will be known after the assessment.”
A landslide in March 2010 in the mountainous district bordering Kenya killed at least 150 people and displaced 10,000 others, according to the New Vision newspaper.
