Uttar Pradesh leads with most electric vehicles in India as states join the nation’s effort to curb pollution by offering subsidies and tax cuts to transition away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

A total of 8.7 lakh active EVs are on Indian roads as on Dec. 8, 2021, according to the Ministry of Heavy Industries. Delhi, Karnataka and Bihar follow Uttar Pradesh.

Still, that’s just 0.32% of the total vehicles in the country, home to some of the world’s most polluted cities. And two-wheelers and commercial three-wheelers account for most of the EVs plying across the nation, BloombergQuint had reported earlier.

The central and state governments are offering incentives to drive acceptance. Union minister Nitin Gadkari last month said the government is aiming for 30% EV sales penetration for private cars, about 70% for commercial vehicles and 80% for two- and three-wheelers by 2030.

State-Wise Snapshot

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state, accounts for the bulk of the EVs registered in India, Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

It’s followed by Delhi and Karnataka a distant third. Bihar and Maharashtra have more than 50,000 registered EVs.

Both Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have seen a higher adoption of electric three-wheelers, according to an earlier report by Ola Mobility Institute.

Gurjar also listed steps taken by the government to increase EV adoption in the country:

  • Production-linked incentive scheme for advanced chemistry cell manufacturing with an outlay of Rs 18,100 crore for five years.

  • PLI scheme for automobile and auto components with an outlay of Rs 25,938 crore over a period of five years. Electric vehicles are covered under this scheme.

  • Goods and services tax on EVs has been reduced from 12% to 5%; GST on chargers/charging stations for EVs has been reduced from 18% to 5%.

  • Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced that battery-operated vehicles will be given green licence plates and be exempted from permit requirements. It also issued a notification advising states to waive road tax on EVs, which in turn will help reduce their initial cost.
