Carlyle Buys First Wind Farms in Push for Clean Energy Deals

(Bloomberg) -- Carlyle Group LP is buying its first wind farms with the acquisition of six sites in New York from closely held Noble Environmental Power.

The wind farms in northern and western New York have a combined capacity of 612 megawatts of electricity, accounting for about 29 percent of the state’s wind production, Washington-based Carlyle said Wednesday in a statement. Terms of the deal, expected to close in the fourth quarter, weren’t disclosed.

Carlyle will be looking to expand its investments in renewable energy as it becomes a bigger part of the power mix, according to Matt O’Connor, managing director and head of Carlyle Power Partners.

New York has set a goal of getting half of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The deal increases Carlyle’s power holdings to about 7,000 megawatts, consisting mostly of conventional electricity plants.
