(Bloomberg) -- Relief may finally be on the way from the oppressive heat and humidity that’s been gripping New York and much of the Northeast for more than a week.
A cool front is forecast to arrive Friday, touching off isolated thunderstorms as it rolls south, said Marc Chenard, a senior branch forecaster at the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. Until then, a heat advisory and an air-quality alert are in effect in New York and its surrounding metropolitan area.
“Today is probably the warmest day,” Chenard said by telephone Thursday. “By Sunday, temperatures should actually be below normal in New York City.”
Humidity has been fierce in New York and elsewhere the region, with dew points around 70 degrees, Chenard said. While the cool front will knock temperatures down, dew points will still be in the 60s. So it won’t be the crisp air New Yorkers are used to in fall.
