The assailants seized a gun from a police officer and then shot him at the residence in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu county, the Nairobi-based newspaper said on its website, without saying where it got the information. They are still in the compound, which has been surrounded by security forces, it said.

Kenya, East Africa’s biggest economy, is due to hold elections on Aug. 8. Ruto departed for a rally in Kitale town a few minutes before the incident, the Standard said.
