CME's Duffy Returns to Work After Collapsed Lung Kept CEO Away

(Bloomberg) -- CME Group Inc. Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Terry Duffy is back at work after recovering from a collapsed lung, according to the company, operator of the world’s largest futures exchange.

A CME director announced Duffy’s illness on May 24 at the company’s annual shareholders meeting to explain his absence. A spokeswoman for the Chicago-based company said Monday that Duffy returned to the office last week.

Duffy didn’t appear June 8 at an industry conference hosted by Sandler O’Neill & Partners LP in New York, with Chief Financial Officer John Pietrowicz speaking in his place. “We expect him back and strong,” Sandler O’Neill analyst Richard Repetto said of Duffy when introducing Pietrowicz.

Duffy, 58, in December added the CEO title to his chairman role. At $43 billion in market capitalization, CME is the world’s largest exchange owner. Its stock rallied for a fifth straight day on Tuesday, an advance fueled by increased trading at the exchange amid the U.K. elections and falling oil prices.
