With the aim to fast-track the development agenda, the Narendra Modi government will encourage competition between states especially in the areas of health, education and water.

To that effect, the Centre has drawn up indices on the basis on which states will be evaluated, Chief Executive Officer of the Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant told BloombergQuint in an interview. The idea is to enable all state governments to adopt each other’s best practices, he explained.

The Niti Aayog on Wednesday organised a conference with chief secretaries and planning secretaries of all states and union territories.

On the proposal to abolish the Rail Budget, Kant said that the government is yet to take a final decision following a report by Niti Aayog member Bibek Debroy. A committee headed by economist Shankar Acharya is examining the possibility of revising the existing financial year to a calendar year, he added.
