The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi regional transport office to de-register all diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old. The move follows the tribunal’s April 2016 order, when it banned all diesel vehicles over ten years old from plying on Delhi roads.

Delhi’s odd-even scheme did not drastically improve the air quality in the national capital region, the tribunal noted. The number of impounded diesel vehicles has increased, the tribunal added.

The NGT also asked the Ministry of Heavy Industries to provide a status report on hybrid and electric vehicles, and the incentives they plan to introduce to encourage adoption of these vehicles.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries urged the court to reconsider the 10-year limit and sought a 15-year threshold instead. However, the NGT reiterated the earlier ban, and said it wants the authorities to phase out every diesel vehicle that’s over 10 years old.
