Hyundai Motor India Ltd. on Tuesday said it will recall as many as 7,657 units of its Eon compact hatchback to repair faulty clutch and battery cables in these cars.

The automaker will recall these cars – all of which were manufactured in January 2015 – in a staggered manner at no cost to the customer, it said in a release.

Hyundai India launched the Eon in 2011, which competes with Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s Alto, and Renault India Pvt. Ltd’s Kwid in the entry-level compact hatchback’ segment.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) had put in a voluntary recall policy in 2012, which has since prompted several manufacturers to recall defective vehicles sold in the country.

Hyundai India has recalled close to 38,000 units of different models so far, in two separate tranches to rectify faults found in them. Peers such as Maruti Suzuki India and General Motors India Pvt. Ltd. have recalled over 100,000 vehicles in two separate tranches to fix issues in their respective models. More than 2.3 million vehicles have been recalled in India over a span of four years, according to data compiled by BloombergQuint from the websites of these companies.

India is currently gearing up for a mandatory vehicle recall policy, which will be a part of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016. The Bill, once enacted, would make automakers liable to a fine if vehicles with proven defects aren’t recalled.
