Lupin Launches Generic Oral Contraceptive Tablets in U.S.

Norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol tablets are a combination of orally taken birth control pills.

Lupin Ltd. launched its generic oral contraceptive Norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol tablets in the U.S. market today, after receiving approval from the U.S. health regulator.

The pharmaceutical company had earlier received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) to market the product, which is the generic equivalent of Ortho Tri-Cyclen tablets manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol tablets are a combination of orally taken birth control pills for females. Besides preventing pregnancy, it is also used to treat acne vulgaris, a chronic skin condition, in females over 15 years of age.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen had sales of $177.6 million in the U.S., according to data from IMS MAT March 2016 report.
